Who We Are
The VFW is a nonprofit veterans service organization composed of eligible veterans and military service members from the active, Guard and Reserve forces. The VFW and its Auxiliary are dedicated to veterans service, legislative advocacy, and military and community service programs.
In 1899, the American Veterans of Foreign Service (Columbus, Ohio) and the National Society of the Army of the Philippines (Denver, Colo.) were organized to secure rights and benefits for veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippines War (1899-1902). These two organizations merged in 1914, creating the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. VFW was chartered by Congress in 1936. Today, nearly 1.7 million VFW and Auxiliary members serve in all 50 states, and many foreign countries. Nearly 6,400 Posts worldwide comprise 52 Departments in the 50 states, the Asia/Pacific Areas and Europe. Posts form the basic local chapter.
What We Do
The VFW takes great pride in its history of service to its communities both stateside and abroad. Annually, VFW and Auxiliary members donate nearly nine million hours to community service projects, relief efforts and local VA facilities each year. Here in Warrenton, local Post 9835. Chartered in May 1948, Warrenton Post 9835 focuses on making a personal difference in the lives of our community's veterans. Over 200 strong, each Post member has served their country in combat or a location where their lives were at risk. We've werved in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and all the way up to today's conflicts in the Middle East. Some of us are serving still. When our country called, we answered. And now we continue to serve our Warrenton community in a variety of ways.
- Participating in local events like Warrenton’s First Fridays and Gum Drop Square
- Providing financial support to local veterans attending community college
- Socializing with aging veterans, our leaders of yesteryear
- Encouraging tomorrow’s leaders through scholarships for Eagle Scouts, Middle School and High School students
- Rewarding outstanding Law Enforcement and Teachers
- Assisting local veterans in need of aid or referrals to veterans services officers
- Supporting Library of Congress Veterans History Project
