Join the Madison Emergency Services Association (MESA) to help us manage the "heart" of our food pantry! Our sorting volunteers are critical to ensuring that the food we receive—from local farmers, grocery partners, and community donations—gets to our neighbors quickly and safely.

What you’ll be doing:

Inspecting Donations: Checking expiration dates and ensuring all packaging is intact and shelf-ready.

Organizing Shelves: Sorting non-perishable goods by category (canned proteins, veggies, grains, etc.) for our "free-choice" pantry layout.

Processing Fresh Food: Helping bag produce or eggs sourced from local Madison County farms.

Inventory Support: Assisting with stocking items from our recent deliveries or Amazon Wishlist shipments.

Why it matters:
Your work directly impacts food security in Madison. By keeping our inventory organized, you enable our neighbors to shop with dignity and efficiency during our pantry hours.

Shift Logistics:

Location: 927 Orange Road, Madison, VA 22731.

Physicality: This role involves standing, reaching, and some lifting (usually under 20 lbs).

Environment: You’ll be working in our climate-controlled pantry alongside a friendly team of dedicated community members.

**Pantry Volunteers:** Help clients during our free-choice pantry hours on Saturdays from 9:30 AM to Noon. Before we open, volunteers will help set up by bringing out bakery items, fruits, and vegetables. After closing, volunteers assist with tasks such as taking out the trash, sweeping if necessary, and putting away any leftover bakery items, fruits, and vegetables.  Initial training and shadowing opportunities will be provided before you volunteer independantly.  While it is not necessary to do so, you may find your volunteer experience enriched if you elect to become regularly scheduled serving multiple times a month.  Click the respond key above and someone will be in touch with you to discuss the level of commitment you are comfortable providing.  We look forward to having you join us in this worthwhile community service effort!
