Opportunities From: PATH Volunteer Hub

Volunteer: Paw Patrol Volunteer

Many Hero’s Bridge Veterans have lost or had to give up pets that were dear to them. Others are having difficulty caring for pets they have loved for years.  Recognizing the positive impact animals provide in our Veterans’ lives, Paw Patrol Volunteers bring their pets on visits to our Heroes wherever they call home, including various types of facilities for individual visits for socials and monthly set facility schedules.  Paw Patrol Volunteers and their furry counterparts conduct visits, help Veterans care for aging pets (assist with veterinary or grooming appointments, walk dogs, help obtain pet food or care items), or to find loving new homes for a Veteran’s beloved canine or feline.  Groups, clubs, and individuals are welcome.

Training and ongoing support provided.

Locations Served: The Counties of Fauquier, Culpeper, Rappahannock, Madison, and Orange.

Volunteer: Home Front Volunteer

Many of the homes our heroes live in served their families well decades ago but are difficult to maintain as veterans age. Some homes are very old and in extreme disrepair, while others require modifications such as grab bars and wheelchair ramps to assist aging in place and maintaining independence. Yard work may also be too difficult a task for the heroes we serve, especially during the change of seasons. Faced with fixed incomes, our veterans often do not have funds to make repairs. Our Home Front team assists with maintenance issues, cleaning, safety assessments and yard work so our heroes maintain a safe and comfortable home.

Hero’s Bridge seeks individuals, groups, and/or companies who are willing to to assist veterans when needs arise. Volunteers may be asked to provide supplies and materials for small projects, and Hero’s Bridge leadership will assist and guide with larger projects which may require community support of supplies and materials.

Volunteer: Hero Driver

Many Hero’s Bridge Veterans can no longer drive themselves to doctor appointments, the grocery store, run simple errands, or to see friends and/or loved ones.  And many of them have no one else to drive them. These Heroes need rides to get the healthcare they need, food and supplies for daily self-care, or to socialize with other Veterans at our monthly socials and excursions.  Some only need help getting around locally a few times a month, some need help getting to the VA in West Virginia once a month, and some need regularly scheduled rides to dialysis on a weekly basis.  Hero Drivers transport Veterans in their own cars, transport groups of Veterans to excursions in the Hero’s Bridge van or drive the wheelchair van to provide equal access for the disabled.  Hero Drivers receive identified needs via a monthly volunteer newsletter, within a self-contained communication system called Workplace, by email or phone.  Hero Drivers choose based on their own availability if they would like to adopt Veterans to transport on a regular or one-time only basis, and briefly document Veteran interactions and time.

Training and ongoing support provided.

Locations Served by Hero Drivers: The Counties of Fauquier, Culpeper, Rappahannock, Madison, and Orange.
