Join The Piedmont Environmental Council in partnership with the Friends of the Rappahannock, the Sperryville Community Alliance, and the Rappahannock League of Environmental Protection for a volunteer tree planting on Saturday, November 18 at the Sperryville Trail in Rappahannock County. Volunteers are needed for two shifts, one from 10am - 1pm and the other from 1:30pm to 4pm, to help plant 125 native trees and shrubs along the Thornton River to enhance water quality and wildlife habitat as part of our Headwater Stream Initiative! We also need 1 photographer for each shift to document our success.
The morning shift (10am-1pm) will be for experienced tree planters only. Some of the trees we will be planting are large and are better suited for volunteers 18 years and older who have planted trees before.
For the afternoon shift (1:30pm - 4pm),volunteer activities include tree planting, which involves scalping (removing grass with a hoe), digging holes, planting, and pounding wooden stakes. Additional activities might include quality control checks of the planted areas, watering newly planted trees, or similar tasks. This shift is a family-friendly event, and volunteers of all ages are welcome! Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Our tree plantings are rain or shine. In the event of dangerous weather, we will reschedule the day’s planting. We will provide all of the necessary tools for planting, extra water, and snacks (no lunch will be provided - please pack your own). Volunteers are encouraged to wear boots or closed-toe shoes and clothing that they’re comfortable getting dirty. Please bring bottled water, sunscreen, and bug spray if needed. Terrain is mostly flat, with a short walk to the planting site. Please arrive 5-10 minutes before your shift begins, as we will be conducting a brief training and walking to the site together!
Location: We will meet behind Black Twig ( 12018 Lee Hwy, Sperryville, VA 22740) at the start of each shift. Parking is available in the Black Twig lot or in other public parking locations in downtown Sperryville.
Please note that the Sperryville Trail is on private land and volunteers should remain on the trail except where otherwise directed by event staff.
This project is made possible by the Trees for Clean Water Grant from the Virginia Department of Forestry
